Tolkien: The Man, the Legend, the Movie

In this, the very first episode of Splanchnics, Clare and Hannah discuss the 2019 biopic motion picture, Tolkien, directed by Dome Karukoski and starring Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins. We explore the inspiration that Tolkien drew from his idyllic childhood and from the trenches of World War I, as well as the effects of trauma on the brain and the power of art and beauty to heal that trauma.

We invite you to pick up your own copy of this lovely film about one of the world’s most beloved authors! Also, you might find this book interesting: A Hobbit, a Wardrobe and a Great War by Joseph Loconte. The subtitle: “How J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Rediscovered Faith, Friendship, and Heroism in the Cataclysm of 1914-1918.” Click on this link to go to our Bookshop.org store, and scroll down to the Tolkien section.
